What is Marketing?
CP:  At my business school - Concordia University, one of the best schools for business - we were taught that the definition of marketing is "a road map".  And, after over 10 years in this profession, it is more true than ever.

Why design a Marketing Plan?
A good marketing plan looks to the future.

"It will defend the company from being reactive...  Marketing is the management of control and implementation of strategy."
{The Marketing Plan, written by William A. Cohen.  Concordia University}.

WHAT does a Marketing Plan Look Like?
A marketing plan is a 5 year plan that will include a SWOT analysis.  If you want to do a one year plan, then this is considered a sales plan or an action plan - not a marketing plan.  This will affect your day-to-day operation and decision making.

What is a Marketing Strategy?
A Marketing Strategy describes how you will reach your objectives and goals.

How does one implement the right Marketing Strategy?
Ahhh, good question.  With experience, lots and lots of experience.  Plus, successful implementation of a marketing strategy comes from fully understanding the strategy itself and good follow-through skills.

What is branding?
Sure we all know it is the logo, corporate colours, etc, etc.  But branding is more than sticking your logo on a sweatshirt.  Seriously, anyone can do that.  When you hire a marketing consultant or bring in a marketing manager to develop your brand, what you are really looking to do is to create a personality for either your company or your product.  Branding can be quite difficult to develop and manage, mainly because it is fluid, meaning it is not a mathamatical equation.  Most companies manage a brand by not changing anything, ugh people - that is not branding.

Where does social media fit in marketing?
While Jamie may disagree with me here, Social Media is under P for promotion. Social Media is not a strategy. Should a software company try to sell their product as a strategy or that they positioned themselves as strategists, run.  Remember software or a technology platform is the chariot not the strategy.
